{Real Party} A SUPERhero birthday

I can’t believe that my little man has turned 2 – and what a character he is! Full of life, a great sense of humour (which I think he knows gets him out of trouble when he’s done something ‘naughty’), loud like his eldest sister and a great love of singing, dancing and anything sweet!

When the time came to thinking about the theme for his party, I was tossing up between rock star and superhero. I decided it had to be superhero when I saw him being Mighty Guy one day!

I contacted Sarah from Style Me Gorgeous to design the invites and other printables for me. She very kindly squeezed me into her busy schedule. Her colour combo of the blue, orange and yellow with a hint of black was spot on and I adored the little superboy silhouette.

We decided to keep the party fairly small with mainly family and just one or two friends his age that he knew but because he has such a sweet tooth, I put together a little dessert table as a special treat. I gathered together my limited knowledge of superheroes and pulled out the sewing machine from my mum’s place to start putting together little superhero capes.

Here’s how the final table looked.

The kids decorated their superhero masks and had a wonderful time playing simple backyard games such as musical freeze (like a superhero, of course), egg and spoon races, running races and bubbles, an all-time favourite at our house. We then had cake and for nearly the rest of the afternoon, Ben was seen standing near the dessert table with something sweet in his hand. The day finished off with kids taking some photos at a mini photobooth I set up for them.

{Real Party} Happy New Year

2011 is the year that Sophisticated Yum will officially be launching itself into the world of sweet event styling and design so what better way to do this than with a celebration on New Year’s Eve. Inspired by Anders Ruff’s Hollywood glam NYE printables, the design used black, teal and a touch of pink.

{Real celebration} A Touch of Vintage

It was a perfect day with the sun shining and a slight breeze in the air. A gorgeous bride, a dapper groom, both totally in love with each other. You could see it in their eyes, their smiles and in their first kiss as husband and wife! What a privilege it was to share that special day with Nia + Johan.

As frequent beach goers, Nia + Johan chose to incorporate a marine theme into their wedding along with a touch of vintage. As the reception was going to be held at Akuna Bay marina, it was certainly fitting. To keep the reception and afternoon teas fresh and unique, I decided to focus on the vintage look for the afternoon tea. As it was a fun and casual affair, I came up with a summery vintage inspired picnic setting, complete with picnic baskets and gingham tablecloths in a gorgeous yellow.

The table was filled with delicious goodies, both sweet and savoury and the kitchen was a hive of frenzy as family and friends worked hard to keep the hungry tummies filled. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to capture the table complete with food, there were just too many people!

{Real Party} Rainbow Fairy Party

Several weeks ago (yes, I’m behind) my little girl celebrated her 4th birthday. She had been asking for a rainbow fairy party months in advance and to be honest, I wasn’t so keen on another fairy party. But as the weeks approached, no matter what other suggestions I made, she was determined to have a rainbow fairy party. Of course, my DH kindly reminded me that the party is about the birthday girl, NOT the party obsessed mum! So rainbow fairy party it was!

Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of styling a candy buffet. It was actually a surprise wedding gift from the maid of honour to her best friend.

Last weekend I styled a chocolate party for a nine year old girl and her friends. It was certainly a chocoholic’s heaven! The excited guests made their own handmade chocolates to take home before hitting the dessert table filled with everything from homemade chocolate birthday cupcakes to meringue kisses filled with chocolate ganache and Belgian chocolate spoons. We used a simple yet effective colour palette of red and chocolate brown.

Here’s the Popcorn cup template that I created for The Ice-cream Challenge party. You could use this for popcorn but it would also be a great party favour box if you are having a movie night theme.

The best thing is that it can fit on an A4 page so doesn’t require any resizing.

Hint: Cut out the two shapes only along the outer edges. The two square sections overlap.

Two weekends ago, I had the privilege of creating a party for an eleven year old girl who wanted a Masterchef and Movie night party! In true Masterchef form, the dessert table was created as the Masterchef pantry for these tween chefs to pick and choose ingredients for their sweet creations, with ice-cream being one of the main ingredients.

Inspired by the ice-cream bar created by Amy from Eat, Drink, Chic, the pantry included a selection of icecreams, toppings, sprinkles and other sweets.
